Meet Kate Burkey

Kate's introduction to fitness began when she made a promise to herself to turn a negative body image into a powerful self-love through exercise. But working out wasn't enough; she wanted to share her new passion with others. Kate's fitness career started with a certification to instruct cycling, and quickly progressed into certifications for group exercise, mat Pilates, and SilverSneakers. Her teaching style is ever encouraging and her exercises always changing. Kate moved to Salida,  from the east coast in May of 2012 and is looking forward to developing a new style of mind and body awareness to bring to her classes; so come join her for a workout and bring your Rocky Mountain energy! Kate is currently teaching our strong arms and balance ball classes on Friday mornings.  She will also be observing and helping out with other classes.  So, welcome Kate to our Pilates community next time you see her in the studio.

Bike to work day is May 18th!

Posted by Lisa Malde on May 3, 2012 on the Salida Citizen. May is National Bike Month and we are celebrating with cycles on May 18th with Bike to Work Day, with coffee food and fun prizes from 7am to 9am!  Bike-to-Work Day is a yearly international event that originated in Europe advocating the importance of bicycling as a means of transportation. The central aim of the Bike-to-Work Day is to give Chaffee County citizens the opportunity to help the environment and exercise in a fun and social way – all before work! Bicycle commuting is a healthy and safe alternative to driving, especially on May 18th when our local Bike-to-Work Day sponsors organize bicycle-related events and pit stops with snacks and prizes.

En route to work, stop by any or all of the following locations for support:

  • Absolute Bikes (330 West Sackett, Salida) will offer free coffee, snacks and prizes and will also provide complimentary safety checks, mechanical expertise, helmet fit advice and other bicycle safety information
  • The Hot Springs Aquatic Center (410 West HWY 50, Salida) will offer free coffee, snacks and prizes
  • The Buena Vista Roastery (409 East Main, Buena Vista) will host mechanics from The Trailhead who are teaming up to offer free coffee, snacks and prizes and provide complimentary safety checks, mechanical expertise, helmet fit advice and other bicycle safety information

We are so pleased to have educated, concerned and supportive sponsors like these to help you safely and comfortably ride your bike to work!

Remember to follow the rules of the road; for a refresher, visit The League of American Bicyclists Rules of the Road page.

Shoes are great they protect your feet, give you balance and stability, but shoes are not good for our floors!  Besides bringing in dirt which lessens the life of our studio flooring, you can track in items, like goat heads, that could hurt one our clients or our staffs bare feet.  Please be aware of removing your shoes when you enter either doors in the studio and if you need something on your feet please make them studio specific, (don't wear them outside or clean them well before you step on the carpet or hardwood.)

Dancers be aware of this with your dance shoes,  besides preserving the life of your shoes you are helping to keep the studio clean and safe for everyone!  Thanks, we all appreciate it!

The Basics of Hatha Yoga Class Added!

The Pilates Studio is excited to add another yoga class to our expanding yoga program!  This one is especially tailored to beginners and any level of yoga student who wants to review the basics and deepen their understanding of yoga.   This class is taught by Mindy Candee and offered in an 8 week series that starts Monday March 12th at 9:00 am until 10:30.  The Basics of Hatha Yoga:  Taught in the adaptive Viniyoga tradition, this class will focus on the fundamentals of physical postures, breath and proper alignment in order to develop flexibility, strength and an increased sense of wellbeing.  You will also learn about counter-posing and sequencing for developing a safe and effective home practice.  Viniyoga is a method of teaching Classical Hatha Yoga, which is adaptive to each student's individual needs.  It focuses on the health of the spine and joint system, emphasizes using the breath in each movement of the body, and often uses repetitive movement in addition to longer holds of postures.

Perfect for beginners, this class is taught in an 8-week progression.  If you are new to Yoga it is recommended that you attend the class as a series.   Drop-ins are ok too!

Cost for the entire 8-week series is $90.00.  Drop-in: $13.00.

Please pre-register for 8-week series!

 Contact Mindy at 719-221-1717 or

Mindy is a Certified Yoga Instructor, Certified Massage Therapist, Structural Integration Movement Instructor.

Mindy Candee has been a student of Yoga since the mid 1980s.  She became an instructor in 2001 and co-founded the Salida Yoga Center in 2004, before passing it on to the current owner.  She has studied with Lex Gillan, Stan Hafner and Johanna Sullivan, among others and carries an Advanced Instructor Certification from the Houston Yoga Institute.  Mindy is passionate about teaching Classical Hatha Yoga in the Viniyoga tradition, passed on by T. Krishnamacharya and T.K.V. Desikachar. She is drawn to Viniyoga because it is not a style of Yoga, but rather a method of teaching Classical Hatha Yoga, which is adaptive to each student’s individual needs.  It focuses on the health of the spine and joint system, emphasizes using the breath in each movement of the body, and often uses repetitive movement in addition to longer holds of postures.  Mindy finds that teaching in the Viniyoga method is an effective means of meeting each student where they are in their own personal Yoga journey.

In addition to being a student and teacher of Yoga, Mindy has been a Certified Massage Therapist since 1992 and a Structural Integration Practitioner (Rolfer) since 2007.  She also has a B.A. in Literature from CU Boulder.  Mindy and her husband, Eric Candee have been happy to make Salida, CO, their home since 2003.

New Amrit Yoga Classes Added

Amrit Yoga classes starting Feb 10: Fridays at 10-11am and Tuesdays at 6-7pm (changed to 6:15 to 7:15) taught by Priti Chanda Klco

Priti Chanda Klco draws her experience of yoga foremost from immersion in nature. Combining 14 years of training and experience in philanthropy, nonprofit administration, yoga, meditation, dance, bodywork, study of languages and world travel with the inspiration of this moment; Priti practices and teaches personal and organizational transformation as the embodiment of balance between mind and heart. She currently serves as Co-Executive Director at the Amrit Yoga Institute.

Amrit Yoga: Take your body mind experience to a new level.

How is Amrit Yoga unique?

Amrit Yoga gives you the key to accessing the “zone” of peak experience at will. Through this practice you will develop not only physical flexibility, endurance and strength, but the capacity to transcend habitual reactions and transform your experience, whether intense and challenging or day-to-day ordinary, into an experience of joyful flow.

Authentic yoga practice is far more than a physical workout. Postures are tools to discover and explore hidden inhibitions. These inhibitions appear as weakness or stiffness in the body, but deeper exploration reveals them to be held as fears, habit patterns and belief systems that drain strength, accelerate ageing, and cause tension. Through the Amrit Method approach called Posture of Consciousness,TM you learn how to transcend instinctive, habitual fight/flight/freeze reactions and move into each posture without force, without fear, and with full awareness. Once you learn how to do this in the “laboratory” of your yoga practice, you can apply the same skills when you find yourself in an awkward situation in life.

What will I get from Amrit Yoga practice?

Watch your body open in response to awareness, revealing strength and health hidden beneath layers of stress. Experience the waves of vitality that are released as you unlock deeply set patterns, dissolving tension and initiating healing on all levels. Soak in relaxation as you feel this energy returning back to nourish your body, calm your mind and open your heart. As you become more skilled in relaxing in the midst of action, your life energy is freed to circulate throughout your body, bringing flexibility, strength, clarity of mind and a pervading sense of well-being.

Once you understand how to go beyond the mind and connect directly to the intelligence of your vital life force, you will find that your body will respond more quickly and easily and reflect more fully the efforts you put into physical training.  By cultivating openness and receptivity, relaxation and focus, you are creating the ideal conditions for super learning and peak performance.

Recipe for transformation: Understanding + Experience = Change in Perspective

The Amrit Method of Yoga is designed to give you not only a deep understanding of the connection between body, mind and heart; but also the direct experience of Yoga (the integrated state of presence, the zone, where you experience life as effortless flow). This leads you into a progressively more conscious and constant relationship with your being, the part of you that extends beyond the limitations of body and mind. Your deepening connection to the source of your vitality and your increased capacity to remain relaxed and aware under pressure will transform your experience of everything you do. This is the real power and potential of Yoga practice.

Lisa Marie's Grand Canyon Trip

Many of you have been asking about Lisa Marie's recent self supported Grand Canyon trip.  She has posted a blog with beautiful pictures of her Thanksgiving trip.  What a wonderful place to go and be thankful.

The Simple Life... Grand Canyon Self Support

Carpooling to Lees Ferry (the put in) my mind was racing; "Do I have everything I need? Will my body agree with paddling 20-30 miles a day? Do I have the mental and physical strength to paddle 280 miles to Lake Mead?" Eight hours later, I realized that all my thoughts would become reality in less than 24 hours. No more questions, time to enjoy the trip and stop planning.

Back in September I hurt my shoulder flying off my mountain bike, so I was a little nervous about my shoulder's strength. I, however, kept in shape by running, pilates, and lots of bodywork on my shoulder. The river was running 20,000 cfs so I knew I could always just go with the flow and use the water to get me down. Luckily my intuition was right, and my body felt strong as soon as I put my paddle in the Colorado River.

If you want to catch the rest of Lisa's story go to her Blog.  It sounds like an amazing trip!  Enjoy!

Community Partners

As many of you have seen we have been very busy at The Studio!  There has been a flurry of activity around our new space.  Steve and Sonia ended up purchasing the space in early September and with that, are excited to be able to create their dream in our new location.  Many people have stopped in and commented on the feel and changes that have happened since this space was a restaurant and how wonderful this new space has turned out and how good it feels.  The exciting part is that we can now offer the back room area as a multi use room for many local area community members and groups.  Since we have moved in, CEDE Dance Studio has followed us and uses the space several nights during the week.  If you have an interest in CEDE and their mission, purpose and schedule, check out their Facebook page  or call 719-207-0500 for more information or to register for classes.  Along with CEDE we have the Little River Tribe.

Little River Tribe

Little River Tribe

Presented in partnership with the CEDE Dance studio,The Little River Tribe is a weekly, youth Drum & Dance Troupe open to kids ages 4-14 held Saturdays 10:00 am and from 11:00 am to Noon the African Dance and Drum Group is using the space on Saturdays.  Contact Andrea if you are interested in either of these groups 719-207-0500

Zumba has also using the space.  Amanda  Wright  is teaching Zumba here on Tuesday nights at 6:15 to 7:15 and to check out the rest of their schedule at and click on "Find A Class" and join the party with Zumba, a fun latin inspired workout!  It’s an exhilarating, effective, easy-to-follow, Latin-inspired, calorie-burning dance fitness-party™ that’s moving millions of people toward joy and health.

Melissa Lee Sobal is offering a free stretching class to anyone in town on Thursdays at Noon.  It has been very well received by the local community and many Pilates students.  Come give it a try!    The Salida Startlettes uses the space from time to time

Steve and Sonia are so happy to be able offer access and use of their space and to be able to provide a room that community members can use.  Steve said "there just aren't that many rooms of that size that can be use by the community, there are many uses and we hope people are becoming aware of the space. We even hosted that volunteers for the US Pro Cycling Challenge for their Volunteer meeting a few weeks after we move into the new location."  The  Pilates Studio is excited in the future to be adding more classes, personal training and an additional Pilates mat instructor.  Details will be coming soon! We are creating a new website which will allow us to blog more and get you more information on those topics you ask us about.  If you come across a good article or ideas that would be good to share with our Pilates family, let us know.  You can email it to us, post it in comments or let one of us know.

For now we are so happy to have settled into our new home and count our blessings that the need for a quick location change this summer came gave us the opportunity to expand and create a space for our all of you and gave us the ability to serve more community members!  This is only the beginning of where we can go in the future and we appreciate your feedback, help and idea's you share with us.  If you aren't on our email list please get signed up, so we can keep you up to date, the sign up is on the front desk!

Just a notice that there have been several schedule changes please check the schedule here on the blog or go to our website, check the brochure rack in the hallway or check with one of the instructors!

Stretching class a huge success

Our Thursday Free Stretching Class was a huge success.  Melissa Lee Sobal lead many community members and Pilates Studio students in an hour-long stretching class.  The class is being offered to work with our hectic schedules and is at noon on Thursdays, so you can come during your lunch break.  No need for complicated clothing or equipment, bring a mat or towel if you have one.  This free class is open to members of the community not just The Pilates Studio clients!  Bring a friend, get a gentle stretch and relax on lunch break.  Contact The Studio if you have any questions.
